Feine Butterplätzchen (Fine Butter Cookies)

On his birthday, December 8th, 2014, K learned how to bake cookies on his elementary school preparation project. As K will be 5 years and 7 months on the beginning of the new school calendar, he can join the project.


K was very proud of himself that he can make cookies. He came home and gave me the cookies and asked me:


"Bibu, do you know what flour is?"


Then he started to explain me the process to make cookies from scratch. How to make the dough, how to roll the dough with rolling pin and how to make the form by cookie cutter. Not to forget that he must throw some flour to the working table so the batter will not be sticky. I wish I recorded that moment.


Butter Cookies


The recipe for the cookies I took from my friend book as K's teacher told me that it's a simple butter cookies recipe.








Feine Butterplätzchen
(Fine Butter Cookies)


Recipe from GU recipe book
Yield: 60 pieces


Ingredients:
Dough:
250 g flour
100 g sugar
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
125 g cold butter
2 egg yolks


Flour for work
Baking paper


Decoration:
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon milk
Colorful caster sugar (if you like)
Coarse sugar (if you like)


How to:
1. Sieve the flour into a bowl. Mix sugar, lemon zest and butter. Fold in egg yolks and knead into a smooth dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it stand in a fridge for 2 hours.
2. Preheat the oven. Cover the baking tray with baking paper. On a floured working surface, roll out the dough into a 3-4 mm thick. Cut out cookies with various cookie cutters and place on plate.
3. For decorating Whisk the egg yolks with milk and sprinkle the cookies with it. Decorate with stray or pearl sugar (if you like) or you can just make it plain.
4. Place the baking tray in the center and bake cookies in the oven at 175°C for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Take cookies together with the baking paper and let it cool.
